Cally and Emma were coming back to their home after hunting when they smelled an unfamiliar scent. They dropped their prey and slowly and quietly crept towards the smell. When they reached it, they crouched closer to the ground. They spotted two young kittens sniffing the air in a big clearing.
Cally and Emma slowly entered the clearing.
“Kittens, what are you doing out here alone?” Emma asked
“W-we wandered here.” the younger looking kitten said.
“Where’s your mom?” Cally asked.
“We don’t have one,” the older kitten said.
“Do you have a dad, home, or names?” Emma asked.
Both kittens shook their heads in response. The sisters looked at each other. Understanding passed between them and they decided to bring the kits home.
“Well can you follow us to our home so we can get you two something to eat?” Cally said.
“Really? You’ll give us food?” the younger kitten asked.
“Yeah, now come on,” Cally replied, picking up the prey.
Later at home, the kittens were asleep and Cally and Emma were discussing adopting the kits.
“They don't have family or homes.”Cally said,”they weren't even named.”
“I know, but should we adopt them? I mean, we have no experience as moms.” Emma replied.
“We’ll get our own kittens eventually, you know. This can help us have experience for when we do.”
“Ok, but one of us stays home with them while the other hunts. Because they can't hunt, and they may get into trouble if they're alone.”
“Ok”
“Kittens wake up,” Emma said, “we have something to tell you.”
“What is it? Do we have to leave?” the older one mewed.
“Actually, the opposite. We decided to adopt you two.” Cally said, “Now, we have to give you names.”
“How about, Ash?” Emma said to the older kit.
“Ooh! I like it!” Ash replied.
“And how about Cinder for you?”’ Cally asked the younger kit.
“Yay! I love it!” Cinder mewed.
Ash and Cinder’s bellies rumble. The two new moms heard and decide that Emma should hunt, while Cally stays behind to make sure the kids don't get into any trouble.
“Alright, I'm going to get food. You guys stay here.” Emma said.
A little while after Emma left, the kittens were bored. They looked for anything to play with. Then they realized they could ask Cally.
“Cally? Do you have any toys?” Ash asked.
“Yes, I think we do. Come this way.” Cally replied.
Cally led them to a room where Cally and Emma slept. Cally went to a corner where there was stuff piled on lots of leaves. The younger sister came to the conclusion first that it was toys Cally and Emma had when they were little.
The kits played with them for a while. Cally watched them and didn't realize Emma was home until she entered the room.
“Ah. I hope you two are having fun” Emma said.
“Oh you're back. And yeah, these toys are amaaazing!” Cinder replied.
“Well, eat your food and get a little fresh air. It's about to rain.”
“Ok!'' Ash and Cinder mewed excitedly.
A day later the family heard a mewing at the entrance of their home. Cally hid the kittens and stayed with them while Emma went to see who it was.
“Hello?” Emma said to the cat.
“Hi could i come and warm myself?’’ the stranger asked.
“Sure…”
“Thanks”
“So who are you?” Emma asked after stanger had warmed himself.
“My name is Dusty,” he replied.
“Why are you here? Anything in particular?”
“Well, I'm traveling and I don't have a permanent home so I find shelter wherever I can.”
“Ok. Ash! Cinder! Cally! Come on down!” Emma called.
The 3 cats came down and introduced themselves to Dusty.
“Well, could I stay here a while? i’ve traveled so much that i've gotten tired of it” dusty meowed.
“Sure” Cally replied, ”but you’ll have to put up with 2 kits”
“That’s fine”
Dusty intended to stay only a few days but found he had fallen in love with Cally and she with him. So, he stayed a couple years. Ash and Cinder grew strong and healthy and went out on their own. Soon Cally had her own kits. She and Dusty found a home not too far away in a hollowed tree.
Emma was left alone in her home. Until one day, a new stranger showed up.
“Hello.” Emma said
“Hi, I'm lost. Could I stay here a while till I find my home?” the stranger asked.
“Sure”
“Thank you. By the way, my name is Diablo.”
Soon Emma fell in love with Diablo, and he fell in love with her and gave up looking for his own home. He stayed with her and eventually, Emma had kits herself. She asked a monkey to tell Cally. But she received news that Cally had been carried off by an eagle the day before Dusty had disappeared. Soon Diablo died in a very different way than Emma did but both hers and Cally’s kits, as well as Ash and Cinder kits, survived and are living to this day..
