I swore under my breath as the screams began. The people we had shot were getting back up, but not as the living. They were getting up as the infected. They reanimated quickly, lunging on the people trying to stand that were still near them. Thank goodness Titania was able to rush towards Caeden just as one of the infected lurched onto the stage. Bang! The zombie fell, a hole in its forehead.
“Tia!” I shouted into the ear cuff.
“Yeah?”
“Get moving towards Titania if you aren’t already.” I said, already backing up towards Titania, shooting down the infected as I went.
“Got it.” I heard fast footsteps across the stage and assumed it was Tia, as there was no no sound of gun shot in that direction. I turned around and sprinted back to Titania and Caeden, waiting for Tia.
“So. how are we gonna get her out of here?” Tia said breathlessly as she ran up, pointing at Titania.
“Don’t know. Any ideas?” I said over my shoulder towards Caeden, firing quickly, then swore as I reached for another magazine. How did I run out so fast?! I screamed in my head.
See, you should always save one bullet for yourself when you're in an outbreak or test positive anywhere. But I hadn't been paying attention and I had no bullets left at all.
“There should be an emergency exit nearby.” Caeden said as he began turning and walking away, Tia, Titania and I followed.
“There it is” he approached a door with a green light above it and four testing kits popped out.
“On three.” Tia declared as me and Caeden nodded.
“One,” I said.
“Two.” Caeden finished as we slammed our hands down without saying three. Titania lagged behind, fear filling her eyes as they looked at everything but the testing kit.
“Green.” I announced, looking at all of our kits. The others nodded as I opened the door, “Caeden you first. You can see best in this dark.”
Caeden nodded and stepped through, then turned back and announced, “All clear. Titania, come on.”
She stepped through nervously and Caeden held her hand to bring her into the exit. Tia followed next then I entered last.
“This way.” Caeden led us deeper into the tunnel, suddenly stopping, “I expected it to be longer till we found the exit. Well, looks like we have to go through one by one.”
“Caeden, you might want to go last, to cover our retreat since you're the one that can see. I’ll go out first in case there are any zombies out there. Anyone have a spare magazine?” I said as Caeden nodded, moving to the back of the group.
“I got four in all. You can have two.” Tia handed me two magazines and I placed one in my pistol before moving to the front of the group, Tia following me so that Titania was behind her.
“Can any of you tell me what is going on?” Titania asked in a shaky voice.
“At the moment?” Caeden paused, then continued, “No clue.”
“That helps me alot.” Titania said dryly, producing a chuckle from Caeden.
I rolled my eyes and opened the door, momentarily blinded by the sunlight. As soon as I regained my sight, I scanned my surroundings, then motioned for Tia and everyone else to come through.
“There’s the van.” I pointed to it then nodded to a pack of zombies on the other side of the parking lot, “Want to make a run for it?”
“Sure.” Caeden said before giving a hesitant glance at Titania, who was wearing a tight dress and high heels.
“You might want to take off your high heels Titania.” I turned back to the pack of infected. They were slowly moving towards the left, where another door had opened up for a group of guests from the convention.
“You probably could just leave them here.” Tia suggested, “It'll be easier to run without them in your hands.”
“Um, ok.” Titania quickly removed her high heels and set them on the ground.
“Guys, we should get going now.” I watched with horror as the infected fell upon the group of guests.
“Gah!” Titania followed my gaze and shouted, drawing the attention of the infected.
“Yeah, we should really go.” Caeden took off in a sprint to the van, slamming his hand down on the testing panel as he reached it. He quickly got in and climbed into the front seat.
Tia took Titania’s hand and together they ran to the van, both going to opposite sides to get tested. I followed close behind, and spun around as I got to the van, keeping an eye on the infected while Tia and Titania got in. Tia shouted something that I couldn’t register but I turned around to see everyone in the van motioning for me to hurry. I slapped my hand on the testing panel and as soon as the lights turned green, I hopped in, slamming the door shut and began climbing to the front passenger seat.
“Go!” I shouted even before I had my seatbelt on and he slammed his foot on the gas and away we went.
